Arizona Prison Teacher Raped in Classroom by Convicted Rapist Agrees To Settlement

December 29th, 2015

(People.com) A prison teacher who was stabbed and raped in her classroom by a convicted sex offender she'd been left alone with has settled her lawsuit with the state of Arizona.

In a statement issued to PEOPLE, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich did not disclose the amount of money in the settlement, but said the case had been "settled to the satisfaction of all parties."

The teacher filed her lawsuit against the state in 2014, seeking $4 million for incompetence.

Jacob Harvey was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to the January 2014 rape inside the state's prison in Florence. He confessed to using a pen to stab her several times before forcing himself on her.

Harvey was in the first year of a 30-year sentence for raping a Phoenix woman whose home he had broken into.

The lawsuit accused prison employees of failing to provide adequate security measures, and alleged that the department's health care provider improperly deemed Harvey a low-risk offender.

Brnovich's statement concluded: "I can assure you the Arizona Attorney General's Office is absolutely dedicated to the pursuit of justice in every case. The only measure of our success is doing what is right. I've told all of our attorneys we don't measure success or settlement amounts in terms of wins or losses, but whether it's the right thing to do."
